APFA to potential scabs: Think Twice (Now with retort)

The flight attendants union at American has a message to American Airlines management that might be recruited to be a scab to fly in case APFA strikes, which is not imminent but certainly possible down the road.

I like this graf. I like any graf, really that starts “Make no mistake.”

Make no mistake. This is about more than just Flight Attendants at American Airlines. It extends to all workers in every facet of the company: from your work place, to the planes we fly, to the airports and to the ramps. It’s about a lifestyle we have all crafted and merit, one in which we don’t live paycheck to paycheck with constant worries about tomorrow. It’s about being able to pay our mortgages and bills and provide for our loved ones. In this, your goals and ours are surely the same.



Here’s AA’s response to the letter:

“We remain committed to reaching an agreement with the APFA in mediated negotiations. However, we also have a commitment to our customers and those who depend on us every day to keep the airline flying. For that reason, we’ve created a contingency plan for staffing flights should APFA decide to take a lawful job action. It is important to remember that a job action can only happen if the parties are released from mediation by the NMB, one or both parties rejects the NMB’s proffer of binding arbitration, and after the 30-day cooling-off period ends – none of which have occurred.

“Our contingency planning is in response to APFA’s strike authorization results, their desire to be released from mediation, and takes into account the lead time necessary for development and completion of the company’s training program. Though we hope and expect that we will not have to implement our contingency operation, this sort of planning is the smart and responsible thing to do at this phase of the process.”
