Around The World, Gap Year Tickets

Purchasing an ‘Around the World’ ticket is most certainly the best and most sensible way to begin your gap year. If you want to spend your year travelling the world, visiting a variety of different locations then an around the world travel ticket is ideal for you. It doesn’t make a huge difference where you purchase you ‘Around the World’ ticket, but you have to remember, if you start choosing obscure routes then the price will quickly hike in price. Avoid flying to “off the beaten path” destinations. The major airport hubs are much cheaper to fly to than secondary airports, especially if you are buying in bulk. Think of your round the world ticket as a general overview of where you’d like to go; for example, don’t include every city in Africa you want to see, choose a flight into Johannesburg (the largest southern Africa hub, and therefore the cheapest) then figure the rest out when you get there.

If you are on a shoe string budget or fancy experiencing Africa by road then why not get around on local busses instead of flying everywhere internally. Is climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania the main reason you are visiting Africa or perhaps you decided to travel to Africa because you wanted to go on a Botswana safari. Although Africa is not on the bog standard ‘Around the World’ trip, it can be inserted instead of travelling to Asia or the Americas for a relatively small amount of money.

All ‘Around the World’ tickets usually comprise of three continents including Asia, The Americas and Australia. Providing you still visit Australasia in the middle of your trip you are able to substitute Africa for either the America’s or Asia to keep your cost down. Zanzibar holidays and Kenya holidays for example can work out more expensive than your entire round the world trip should you choose to plan them from home so why not incorporate them into your trip whilst you are on the ground in Africa.

A sample around the world ticket could go something like this. London to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Santiago (Chile) to Auckland, New Zealand then flying onto Sydney (Australia). So far you have covered two continents and from Sydney you can take a flight to Johannesburg (South Africa) to complete your three continents. If you’re feeling adventurous then travel by land all the way up to Nairobi (Kenya) to get your flight back home.
