Tanzania Travel Attraction – The Serengeti National Park
Since 1913 when explorer Stewart Edward White called it a heaven, Serengetis natural ambience has gotten better with age like fine wine. So good it even inspired a Disney animated movie – The Lion King. Located in Northern Tanzania, Serengeti extends across the Maswa Game Reserve, Ngorongoro Conservation area and Lake Natron. It is seperated from Kenyas Maasai Mara by the Mara River. Tanzania safari lovers will not be disappointed with the Serengeti.
With two biosphere reserves, it has been described by UNESCO as a global heritage site. The vast 30,000km2 ecosystem teams with panoramic landscape, rich history and wildlife and cultural Maasai influence. It features the oldest ecosystem on earth. Yearly, over 90,000 tourists, visiting the modern day Africas Eden are spoilt for alternatives; they include scientists, hikers, archaeologists, writers and honeymooners.
Serengeti is derived from Maasai word Siringit that means the place where the land runs forever true to its meaning; a safari to the Serengeti is infinite, as its vastness. Tourists may delight walking safaris, hot air balloon safaris, game drives with possibilities of bush lunches and dinners. Holidaymakers can also opt for bird watching safaris and see birds like the yellow wagtails, white storks, ibis, saddle bail storks, and ruff.
Dubbed the high noble arc of the clear African sky, Serengetis sunset has provided many photographers treasures of timeless photos. The tranquil plain blue skyline renders the hands down best setting for hot air balloon excursions. Visitors can watch as predators stalk their prey in the grassy plains or witness the riotous wildebeest migration spectacle, thanks to the birds eye view provided by these hot air balloons.
The migration starts early April when wildebeests and other browsers resist odds and cross the crocodile infested Mara River to the Maasai Mara for green grass. This heavily awesome show has been named the seventh worlds wonder.
Visitors may also visit the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano that discharges carbonatite lava which on exposure to air changes its color from black to white, resembling washing soda. The thick layer of ash toughens as cement when rained on and tree roots cant interpenetrate it. At some parts of Serengeti, this has led to treeless plains. Granite outcroppings called Koppes, that provide a micro habitat for non plains wildlife like the Simba Koppe, are a result of this volcanic activity.
Having the largest animal concentration in the whole world all year, the Ngorongoro Crater is popular with adventurous vacationers. Its caldera volcano is the largest of its type in the world and is home to the Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakey archaeologists discovered a 1.8 million year skeleton. It is therefore considered to be the origins of humanity.
chartered and regular flights may land at the Seronera Airstrip here in the Serengeti. Fly 540 operates routine flights from the Kilimanjaro International Airport. From Mwanza, Arusha and Lake Manyara there are charter airlines that fly there.
In regards to Tanzania hotels, there are several lodges and hotels that operate in Serengeti are the Crater Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, Sopa Lodge, Serena Lodge and Simba and Kleins Campsite. The architecture of these hotels and lodges exude the spirit of the Serengeti. Their interiors are decorated with Maasai artifacts and other decorations that show the activities there like sunset, wildebeest migration and active volcano among others.
