The Strangest Hotels You’ll Ever See

Many of us are aware that the world today is a strange old place. For hundreds of years now, the holiday industry has been growing steadily and gaining popularity, ever since disposable income became more common. Since the industry began, people have adapted or created millions of different hotels, resorts, cabins, b&b’s, getaways and lodges, and in all kinds of different buildngs. In the current climate there are millions of bland, faceless cheap hotels with similar box rooms, so why not stay somewhere a bit different? Below are some of the most unusual hotel deals you can stay in:

- Das Park Hotel, Linz
From the masters of utilitarian design and innovation, the Austrians, comes the Park Hotel. These concrete tubes were once sewage pipes under the city, but have now been reclaimed and house snug tubular rooms with all amenities. Don’t worry, these pipes have been thoroughly cleaned, and now make a trendy getaway spot on the banks of the Danube.

- Propeller Island Lodge, Berlin
This is certainly the strangest hotel destination around. Set up by German artist Lars Stroschen, it offers ‘habitable works of art’. These come in the form of the mirror cube room, complete with audio visuals by Lars, gothic ‘coffin’ beds, the upside down room with furniture on the ceiling and one with a one way mirror to the next room. There really is nothing else like it, but it’s a bit of a scary place!.

- Crane Hotel, Harlingen
An amazingly innovative use of a non functioning dockside crane here from the Netherlanders.. Previously unused for years, the static crane sat on the dockside until snapped up by an innovative company who then turned it into a bijou single bedroom hotel. With an industrial inspired interior but wonderfully designed and plush, it makes an great place to stay. The winning feature is that it rotates, so you can choose your sea view!

- Capsule Hotel, The Hague
Another bit of Netherlands ingenuity here, taking a life pod from an old oil rig, placing it on a beach and converting it into a luxury private room. Perfect for a Bond inspired break, and one ever comes with Martini making equipment as standard. A luxury spa hotel it’s not, but they float at high tide and are a real adventure!
