An aerial photo of Atlanta International Airport in the 1930s.

On this date in 1930, Delta Air Lines started service with a Travel Air S-6000-B with five passengers to Atlanta International Airport (ATL) from Birmingham, Alabama. At the time, the ticket would only cost your $9.80 (which is about $150 in today’s dollars). Delta moved their headquarters to Atlanta in 1941 and has been there since. During their time in Atlanta, they have met a lot of milestones:

* Early pioneer of the hub-and-spoke air traffic system, starting in Atlanta.
* First jet service in Atlanta (to New York on September 18, 1959).* First service to Europe from Atlanta in 1964, in interchange operations with Pan Am. (Pan Am crews flew the international segments).
* First nonstop service from Atlanta to California (1961).
* First nonstop trans-Atlantic service from Atlanta (to London-Gatwick in April 1978).
* First airline in the world to board one million passengers in one city in one month (in Atlanta in August 1979).
* First airline to board 2 million passengers in one city in one month (in Atlanta in 1997).
* First commercial flight to land on the new fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, hailed as “The Most Important Runway in America” when it opened (May 27, 2006).

Spending 80 years flying passengers around the world from Atlanta is pretty impressive. When flying into  Atlanta, it is quite obvious the impact that Delta has there. Cheers to another 80+ years of Delta flying out of Atlanta!

Tips for Long Distance Round the World Flights

Trips around the world often start with a long-distance flight. So, to help you out, we’ve compiled a few tips. They might help you stay fresh, avoid jetlag, and ensure friends and family at home stay in touch.

Packing: Most likely, you don’t have to transport your whole wardrobe around the world with you. Consider the things you might be doing on your travels, and cross-check this list to see whether some clothes can cover multiple activities. Remember, checked-in luggage can sometimes get lost. So pack all the things you really need when you arrive in your carry-on bag.

Fighting jetlag: It’s the bane of any long-distance traveller. But there’s a simple way of fighting it: drink lots of water on the plane. Also, if you arrive in your destination before 1pm local time, try not to sleep any longer than three hours. After 1pm you should try and keep awake until at least 7pm, if you can.

Freshening up: It’s often worth taking a clean change of clothing and some toiletries onboard. It’s great to stay fresh – and particularly useful if, by some chance, your baggage doesn’t arrive at your destination at the same time as you.

Getting some sleep: You might want to take an eye mask and a blow up pillow. If you think you’ll need earplugs, the wax ones cut out more of the sounds around you – they’re often sold for swimming, so bear this in mind when you go shopping.

On the move: Lots has been said about long-distance travel and the risks of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). There are a few ways you can avoid problems and stay more comfortable. Don’t putting things under the seat in front of you, so you can stretch out. Take regular walks, even if it’s just to the toilet. Toe raises, calf stretches, side bends and back extensions are great ways to keep your body fresh.

Staying warm: Take layers, so it’s easy get warmer or cooler. If you need to look presentable when you arrive, pick dark clothing as it doesn’t show creases or stains so freely.

Staying entertained: Most flights now have on-board entertainment. Even so, there’s still often time to kill. Why not save a good book for your journey? The time will fly by [pardon the pun].

In contact?: If you’re travelling with your mobile, but won’t be able to pick up reception where you’re going, leave a number on your voicemail where callers can contact a family member or friend in an emergency. When you’re abroad, it’s advisable to ring home regularly. If your mobile doesn’t work (or it’s way too expensive to call), carry a pre-paid international phone card.

How to Get Free Around the World Flights

There happen to be a couple of strategies released that happen to be helping individuals all more than the globe to obtain highly discounted airline tickets, and you may already be one of them, nevertheless, if reduced airline tickets just aren’t cutting it for you then you might prefer to go after free tickets as an alternative. Yes, it’s a reality, you can get free of charge travel tickets to practically any location in the globe that you can think of, and all utilizing totally legal methods that need only that you simply discover them and use them.

You may think to yourself “Yeah right, if free tickets were so simple to obtain then why isn’t everybody doing it?” Well, the truth is that these methods have been closely held industry techniques until now, and those who have been utilizing them, have kept these techniques well hidden. Should you had a goose who laid golden eggs, would you run around telling everybody, or rapidly move it to the bank vault?

Recently, a disgruntled industry insider, Mr Tony Morrison, has struck back in the airline business by exposing numerous of these techniques, towards the otherwise unaware public. In his guide, Tony reveals many valuable secrets to us on ways to not just get free of charge travel, but also free accommodation, meals, and also entertainment to name just a few. Tony also reveals how he managed to not only get paid by the airlines to travel to places of his choice, but also how he was capable to turn around and make this into a profitable company for himself in under a year!

Below is outlined just 1 of the more common methods used by individuals in modern times to obtain free of charge or really heavily discounted tickets to any place within the world that you simply select:

One insider industry secret that’s revealed in Tony’s incredible guide and that he goes on to explain how to use to increase your chances of gaining a free airline to a place of your choosing, is the airline strategy recognized much better as “The 10% Overbook Rule”.

You see, it’s typical understanding within the industry that when a airline is reserved and filled about the days leading up towards the departure date, that invariably lots of things can happen to the prospective travellers that would result in them not being able to make their flight. Examples might include sickness, or other family issues, work related issues, unforseen financial issues, or even just a change of mind. In the end, the rule of thumb for that airlines is that they will allow for a 10% factor of no shows in their bookings due to whatever cause has made them miss their flight.

This means that on the flight of, say, a boeing 747-300, which would taxi 300 passengers during the flight, that approx 30 of these passengers would be within the feasible no display list. For this cause the airlines will really sell a total of 330 seats, rather than the maximum 300 that the plane can hold, as a result allowing for the 10% chance of no shows.

For an example, lets say, American Airlines, booked a airline from the LAX to Heathrow. The aircraft is really a boeing 747-300, meaning that the airline would really sell 330 seats about the plane to permit for that 10% no show rule. The day from the airline rolls close to and true to form, the airline has sold all 330 seats, nevertheless a issue has arisen. Only 25 individuals were no shows, meaning that 5 of the seats happen to be double booked. What now?

The airline now has to step in and prioritise on which 5 customers are going to have to be created to wait for that next obtainable flight. Usually, this will involve a message over the loudspeaker in the airport, that will ask for volunteers of that flight who can afford to wait for that next flight to come forward and volunteer to wait. What they don’t say may be the interesting part though!

For those five unlucky individuals who have to wait for the next flight, will usually obtain some kind of complimentary thank you from the airline for volunteering to help with their issue and wait for the next airline, and this generally comes by way of a several hundred dollar discount on your following flight, or other free of charge services maybe on your current flight.

So, now you know about one of the business insider techniques, recognized as the 10% Overbook Rule, but how do you use this to your advantage, you ask, to assist you secure free of charge tickets for your self. This is the simple component! When you book your airline, inform them that you simply are travelling casually and are more than willing to take another flight in the event that your flight becomes overbooked. The booking agent will make notes within the system and you will be given very first priority to receive this benefit. Also booking your flights in well-liked travel seasons, such as school holidays and also world holidays such as Christmas, can improve the chances from the flight reaching overbooked status.
