The Best Way To Organize Plans For Travel

People wait all year to enjoy a week or two away from the daily grind and go on vacation. Whether you head to the beach, or hit the slopes, vacations are a great way to relieve stress and unwind. However, the travel can be rough. These days, flying is an event unto itself, and you have to begin planning months in advance in order to be prepared to board a plane. Even if you are not flying, it can be a hassle getting from your home to your destination. If you are driving, the long hours for the kids can lead to whining. Even if it is just you and a friend or a significant other, it can get boring sitting and just watching the highway pass you by. Finally, if you have opted for a more classic mode of travel, you are going to need to pass several hours in a train car or on a bus. No matter where you are headed, find ways to ease the burden of travel. This is especially true for those headed to America’s favorite theme park in Florida. An Orlando airport shuttle or another type of organized Orlando transportation will get you from the airport to your hotel and back with ease.

Once you are at the hotel, you should take some time to regroup in your hotel room. This is important because before you know it, you will be traveling again. The last thing anyone wants to do is deal with stress when their vacation has ended and they are headed home. It is bad enough your vacation has ended; you should not have to leave in a hassle and get home more stressed than you were when you left. If you traveled with a passport, store it in a safe place. Other travel papers should also be stored in a safe place. Consider a pocket of your suitcase that is otherwise empty. Take a quick peek at your luggage to make sure the identity tags are still in place. If you need to replace them, do so now so you do not forget when it is time to board the plane.

Also be sure you have written down the time of your return flight and made arrangements to get back to the airport. This way, you can relax and enjoy your vacation without worrying about travel plans. If you want to enjoy your vacation, it is important to plan ahead. If you wait until the last minute for planning, the trip may be unnecessarily stressful. Instead of traveling frazzled, have a good travel plan in place and enjoy your vacation.

12 Year Old Gets Body Scanned Without Parental Permission

A person checks a body scan image.

A person checks a body scan image.

Some folks might have no problem having their privacy violated to fly on a plane, but how about a child? Do you know who the TSA agent is viewing those partly-nude images of your child? What if you are not even there with your child?

Recently a 12 year old girl was put through the scanner without her parents concent at Tampa International Airport (the same location where I avoided the scanners). As the girl describes, going into the body scanner happened quickly and she was not aware what the machine was.

The girl was traveling with her friend and her friend’s parents back to her home in Baltimore. The St. Petersburg Times was able to get a phone interview with the 12-year old passenger about her experience:

“Okay, I was coming home to Baltimore, Md., from Siesta Key, Fla., and I was with my friend and her parents and I was going to this airport security check.

I put my bag through, and they pulled me aside and told me to go over here. I thought it was some high-tech scan and I walked right through it and this lady said ‘”Hold on, you can’t just walk through this thing. Put your feet on the yellow footsteps and make a triangle above your head.” I guess it was so they could see my whole body.

I heard a beep and she said, ‘Okay you can leave.’

I heard one of the guards say ‘affirmative on the female,’ and I knew they were talking about me. And that made me worried.

I couldn’t see my friend and her dad, and I was really worried that I was separated from them. I was trying to look happy when I saw them but inside I was really scared.”

I think the parents might be overreacting a bit, they took their daughter to a doctor to have her checked out, but I think there are some important things to consider with this instance. I am more concerned with someone’s child being scanned against their will, since the child does not know what is going on with the body scanners. Heck, most adults don’t know what is going on with the body scanners, but at least they are old enough to be aware of what the body scanners are.

“Our daughter was scared and didn’t understand what was happening,” said Michelle Nemphos, the mother of the girl. “In essence they conducted a strip search on a 12-year-old girl without her parents present to advocate for her.”

Yes, there are little signs showing what the body scanner does, but is that enough? The images it shows are small and passengers do not understand these machines are optional. Even if you think body scanners are a good idea, do you think children should be scanned as well?

Thanks Sam for pointing out this story!

Lesson learned about blog software upgrade

If you look at the blog, you might notice the header image has changed. Well, I am down in Florida for an extended weekend and decided to upgrade my WordPress blog software…MISTAKE! Not only did the whole blog go down for a bit, but when I got it fixed, my header image disappeared. I have it on my home computer and will fix it on up when I return home, but until then, you get to look at this wonderful temporary header that I edited in Microsoft paint :) .

UPDATE: Thanks to a friend, Dan, I have a much better temp header to use until I return home!

Tips for Long Distance Round the World Flights

Trips around the world often start with a long-distance flight. So, to help you out, we’ve compiled a few tips. They might help you stay fresh, avoid jetlag, and ensure friends and family at home stay in touch.

Packing: Most likely, you don’t have to transport your whole wardrobe around the world with you. Consider the things you might be doing on your travels, and cross-check this list to see whether some clothes can cover multiple activities. Remember, checked-in luggage can sometimes get lost. So pack all the things you really need when you arrive in your carry-on bag.

Fighting jetlag: It’s the bane of any long-distance traveller. But there’s a simple way of fighting it: drink lots of water on the plane. Also, if you arrive in your destination before 1pm local time, try not to sleep any longer than three hours. After 1pm you should try and keep awake until at least 7pm, if you can.

Freshening up: It’s often worth taking a clean change of clothing and some toiletries onboard. It’s great to stay fresh – and particularly useful if, by some chance, your baggage doesn’t arrive at your destination at the same time as you.

Getting some sleep: You might want to take an eye mask and a blow up pillow. If you think you’ll need earplugs, the wax ones cut out more of the sounds around you – they’re often sold for swimming, so bear this in mind when you go shopping.

On the move: Lots has been said about long-distance travel and the risks of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). There are a few ways you can avoid problems and stay more comfortable. Don’t putting things under the seat in front of you, so you can stretch out. Take regular walks, even if it’s just to the toilet. Toe raises, calf stretches, side bends and back extensions are great ways to keep your body fresh.

Staying warm: Take layers, so it’s easy get warmer or cooler. If you need to look presentable when you arrive, pick dark clothing as it doesn’t show creases or stains so freely.

Staying entertained: Most flights now have on-board entertainment. Even so, there’s still often time to kill. Why not save a good book for your journey? The time will fly by [pardon the pun].

In contact?: If you’re travelling with your mobile, but won’t be able to pick up reception where you’re going, leave a number on your voicemail where callers can contact a family member or friend in an emergency. When you’re abroad, it’s advisable to ring home regularly. If your mobile doesn’t work (or it’s way too expensive to call), carry a pre-paid international phone card.
