Campaigners Stop Second Runway at Stansted Airport

Anglia News The Duke Of York Work & Stansted Airport Second runway Molehill Green

The application for a second runway at Stansted airport has been withdrawn by the British Airports Authority (BAA) after an eight year battle with anti-expansion campaigners.
The new coalition British government have clearly indicated that they will not back the proposed airport expansion plans and they will withdraw the provision for assisted relocation within the homeowner support scheme. This latest move follows the withdrawal of plans to expand Heathrow airport.
David Johnston, Stansted Airports managing director, has stated that he and his staff will be working hard to bring new business to the airport. They say that they are committed to working closely with the local community in order to provide jobs and fresh opportunities for business and travel. He firmly believes that the South East Area of England needs a greater airport capacity in order to support the development of UK international trading links.

The campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) have said that the fight is far from over. They now want to focus on the future and the forthcoming Government white paper on aviation, due for publication in 2011. While this latest victory is a step in the right direction they want to be certain that there will never be an additional runway at Stansted airport.

SSE wants to be certain that the local community is fully aware of the importance of the forthcoming National Policy Statement. The ongoing campaign is designed to raise local awareness so that as many people as possible respond to next years public consultation. They will be using the Never Again theme in a prominent, supporting poster campaign.

SSE plan to enlist the support of relevant local authorities in the vicinity of Stansted Airport . They will also be seeking support from local members of parliament (MPs).

This latest victory is the fourth time that a proposed second runway has been defeated in fifty years. Campaigners now want fifty years of peace without the need to worry about airport expansion.
