Chicago knows how to celebrate a Stanley Cup

I spent about half my just-ended vacation in Chicago. As we were walking back from a June 9 evening performance of “Billy Elliot,” we learned that the Chicago Blackhawks had won the Stanley Cup.

There were hoots and hollers among pedestrians and drivers, with a lot of horn honking and people leaning out the windows crowing. It was a very happy scene, with no disorderly conduct that we saw.

Two days later, Chicago threw a parade for the victors, with the mayor’s office estimating that 3 million people gathered. (We waited in a huge crowd about 15 minutes for the parade to start, since our hotel was only a block away from the launch point. We gave up. It finally started 40 minutes late. But we were interlopers — we didn’t care whether the Blackhawks or Flyers had won.)
